Explore Tolt-MacDonald Park With Kids This Fall

A Carnation outing with river views, play equipment and forest trails

Tolt-MacDonald Park brings together several kinds of family adventure in one Carnation destination. Families can stay near the main day-use area for play and a picnic, walk across the suspension bridge for river views, or continue into the forest trail network.

The 575-acre park sits where the Snoqualmie and Tolt rivers meet. King County notes that fall visitors may see spawning chinook salmon, with eagles and osprey overhead. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the seasonal setting gives families a reason to slow down and look carefully.

What the park offers

  • Play equipment
  • Public restrooms
  • On-site day-use parking
  • Picnic shelters and picnic areas
  • A 500-foot suspension footbridge
  • Twelve miles of forested and riverside trails
  • Access to the Snoqualmie Valley Trail
  • Hiking and mountain biking
  • Ballfield, amphitheater and boat launch
  • Seasonal tent, RV and yurt camping

Choose your outing

Short visit: Stay near the east side day-use area, use the play equipment and have a picnic.

Bridge adventure: Cross for river and foothill views. The west side has no public vehicle access, so every item must travel with you.

Trail day: Continue into the forest, but choose a turnaround point before kids get tired.

Practical fall tips

  • Wear shoes that can handle damp ground and mud.
  • Bring water and snacks.
  • Use extra caution near both rivers and follow posted warnings.
  • Save the official trail map before leaving home.
  • Keep bikes and fast-moving kids controlled on shared paths.
  • King County says the gate closes at dusk from September through April.

Camping is seasonal

Campsites and yurts require reservations and have separate rates and rules. Day visitors can enjoy play equipment, picnic areas, the bridge and trails without booking a campsite.
